I'm sure, or at least I hope, Linux users will eventually become more aware of the constantly evolving security risks involved in using various non-Microsoft operating systems, although it probably has been reasonably safe to use a standard Linux distro with a firewall/activated ip-tables up to this point. But not anymore. The old adage that goes "Linux is safe, because it's Linux" no longer is the whole truth IMO. If Linux were so safe out of the box, why do we see a plethora of security applications such as advanced intrusion detection systems, kernel patches, rootkit hunters, SElinux and so forth.

Linux magazines for the average Joe tend to dedicate very few pages or articles on general Linux security, but I definitely agree they should elaborate much more on specific distros, such as yours, that mainly focus on security.

When I first stumbled upon Linux couple of months ago, the first thing that hit me was the tremendous tide of information available on the net, on "how to tighten your linux box". Huh? I thought Linux was safe! Why did I need to tighten it? Nevertheless, I was glad that I did a small investigation on why and how Linux was secure, and how it could be tightened even more. If I hadn't done that, I still would probably be happy enough with a "generic" distro that had no firewall and had all services enabled by default.

I tried Ubuntu as my first distro and was quite disappointed by its approach since many services were enabled by default and the firewall was disabled by default (resulting in several open ports) as well. Fedora on the other hand has a firewall enabled by default and, if you want, SElinux enabled by default as well. Since then I've tried many other distros and
I came to conclusion that Linux security doesn't come with every distro - you simply have to pick one that hopefully focuses on security more than the other one you've been looking at.

Sorry for answering so late, but I was i Romania and did not have time to write from there. I hope that after you tried many distros that NetSecL will suite your needs. And I'm heavily working on the next release of NetSecL :)

Hi, hope you had a pleasant trip!
NetSecl suits my needs great, I am using it on one of my pc's at home.
I will be looking out for the next release. Will it come with KDE only?

I'm actually thinking of mixing Xfce and parts of KDE. KDE takes some space and one of my goals is to reduce the size of the distro and get it on Source Forge. But I promise you it will have the feel of KDE. I have listed some stuff here http://netsecl.myfreeforum.org/about87.html that says what the future of NetSecL will look like.

Hi, sorry for replying late.
It'd be very cool to mix Xfce and KDE (although I'm a strict Xfce and Gnome guy myself. :) and thanks for the preview on what's expected in the new version. Keep up the good work!
