|

Hi Folks,
I finally got NetSecL downloaded with my phone connection. I've spent most of the day trying to install it.
The 1.3 installer won't install lilo to the root partition or to a floppy. I have tried all kind of combinations of kernels and software. This I believe is a bug. I can boot the partition from the install disk, but then the system boots without grsecurity and probably other modules.
I will try the distro on my other computer.
Peace,
John

I haven't changed the Lilo package. I install to MBR - without problems. If you like you can install to MBR and I can help you to get the other systems bootable with lilo. |

Hi Iuri,
I booted from the NetSecl cdrom. Then I ran /sibin/liloconfig which installed lilo to the root folder. Now the distro boots correctly. I don't have any idea why the installer doesn't work. If anyone else is having problems, this might fix it.

| Well actually the setup runs liloconfig from your already installed system, so it is really strange. I investigated and found nothig wrong. The only thing I changed in the installer from the previous version was "ISlack" which I changed to "NetSecL" so I really don't see what might be wrong. I myself didn't experience any problems with the liloconfig from the setup. I'll need more info to recreate the error. |

Hi iuri,
My HD is a Seagate st380011a ata. With 6 systems on my HD, I attempted to install lilo to the root partition. The installer didn't return an error number. It merely said that an error was returned. The message also stated that I would need to use a startup disk. The message also stated that it might be possible to manually install lilo and reconfigure the etc/lilo.config file. I got the same results when trying to create a startup disk. I tried re-installing with the 2.4 and the generic kernels and got the same result.
I don't suppose this information was much help. I have a partition with Backtrack on it that hasn't been getting much use. I could put another NetSecl system there. Could you tell me where to find the information you need?
Peace,
John
P.S. This might be relevant - I was installing NeSecL to the 6th partition on my H.D. However, I had no difficulty installing 1.2 there. |

Didn't you get something similar "error installing LILO (Error #1)"? The number of the error is after #. This is the meaning of the lilo errors:
00 no error
01 invalid disk command
02 address mark not found
03 disk write-protected
04 sector not found
06 floppy disk removed
08 DMA overrun
0A bad sector flag
0B bad track flag
20 controller failure
40 seek failure (BIOS)
40 cylinder>1023 (LILO)
99 invalid second stage index sector (LILO)
9A no second stage loader signature (LILO) |

Hi Iuri,
I did not get an error number. I just got a message that an error was returned.
Is there anything else I can look for that might help identify the problem?
Peace,

John,
What kernel did you use in ISlack 1.2?
I found something, but this affects only those installing on a virtual machine with the 2.6.x kernel. |

Hi Iuri;
I used the 2.6 grsecurity kernel.
Is there anything I should look for if I re-install 1.3 an another partition?
The root partition was hda13. This was a non-primary partition.
Peace

Hi John,
I think your problem was the same as the one I fixed. Partition Magic Bootloader maybe provides similar conditions like the virtual machine. Have you tried ISlack 1.2 with 2.4.x kernels? If the 2.4 kernels didn't work for you in ISlack 1.2 this will explain why you were not able to install lilo on NetSecL 1.3. Can you try ISlack 1.2 with a 2.4.x kernel? |
